ECC students
At Elgin Community College (ECC), we understand that being a first-generation college student is a huge accomplishment. Did you know that nearly 50% of our students are considered ‘first-gen,’ which means they are the first in their family to attend college or that their parents or guardians didn’t attend college in the U.S?
Being first-gen can feel exciting, but we know it can also come with its own unique challenges. First-gen students often navigate higher education without the built-in guidance their peers might already have. From understanding financial aid to managing academic expectations, they frequently have to figure things out on their own. This sometimes leads to feeling like they don’t belong, which can lead to falling behind or quitting altogether. [Check out what ECC students have to say about belonging]
Despite these challenges, first-generation students are also some of the most resilient, determined, and adaptable students you’ll meet. They know they have limitations coming in, and at ECC, we make sure they know they are not alone. Below are four student resources that first-generation students can access to help guide them through their academic journey.
First-gen college students are eligible for TRiO support services. TRiO is a program that can help you navigate academic, financial, and personal challenges. At ECC, our team of TRiO employees will understand that you are the first in your family to go to college and that you might need more support than the average student. Their job is to meet you and lift you up! They’ll help provide and connect you with services like tutoring, career exploration, financial aid, visits to four-year institutions, and more.
ECC can provide you with personalized support through our dedicated Student Success Coaches. Our Student Success Coaches provide wrap-around support services to assist you on your academic journey. They’re there to help with everything from setting goals and managing your time effectively, mastering test-taking strategies, advocating for yourself, and staying motivated.
College can feel like a lot, and that feeling can be even more overwhelming for first-generation students. ECC’s Wellness Services provide the support you need to feel your best self when working toward your degree and career goals. The types of support available range from confidential phone call sessions to mental health screenings, campus support groups, and more.
College is more than just going to class, and no matter how you start off, there are endless opportunities at ECC to find your community. You can continue your athletic passion and join a sports team, find a student club that fits your interests, or explore the music, arts, and drama scene that’s always bustling.
To the future and current first–gens, you are not alone! You’re setting a new milestone in your family by being here, and that is an amazing accomplishment on its own. ECC exists to help students succeed—all students.
