Common Registration Problems

Registering for courses at ECC is easy—especially if you plan.

Summer and fall semester registration begins in April, and signing up for the spring semester begins in November. Some classes fill quickly, so register early to reserve your spot in class. The better prepared you are on registration day, the smoother the process will go. Here are some of the most common registration issues, along with solutions.

Most services are available online by using the accessECC portal. Please use our chat system or email registration@elgin.edu for help with registration questions so we can assist you.

Common Issues When Registering

If you’re an incoming student, you must apply for admission before registering for classes or email admissions@elgin.edu.

You must reapply if you have previously attended ECC and are returning after two or more years of hiatus.

Applying is simple:

  • Create a new application
  • No deadlines or application fees
  • After applying, we'll email your student ID and guide you through enrollment.

Please email a photo of your Illinois driver’s license or state ID so we can verify your in-district residency status. We'll promptly inform you once the residency verification process is complete.

See the district map and enter your address

If you don't have an Illinois DL or state ID with your current address, provide at least two of the following:

  • Signed lease
  • Utility bill
  • Tax bill in the student’s name
  • Voter’s registration card

Review the complete list of alternative documents in the Administrative Procedure 4.102 - Student Residency.

  • Employment Verification (35+ hours/week in-district)
  • Veterans (Post-9/11 GI Bill® or related acts)
  • Joint Agreement Students
  • Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Students
  • In-District High School Graduates
  • Dual Credit / Contractual High School Programs
  • Homeless Students
  • ECC Employees (Active Full- or Part-Time)

Before registering for a course, you must meet particular prerequisites. You can fulfill these requirements by demonstrating college-ready reading, writing, and math skills.

See placement tests for additional information.

To finalize enrollment and keep your chosen classes, you must pay your tuition in full or sign up for a payment plan online. You can also complete your financial aid package by the published deadline. Remember, applying for an ECC scholarship is an option, too.

Unpaid fees, including tuition, parking, or library fines, will prevent you from registering for classes. Be sure to pay all your financial obligations, including any outstanding balances, by the semester or summer session deadline.

If you're not prepared to pay your tuition in full before classes begin, pay in installments through one of our no-interest payment plans. A $30 non-refundable service fee per semester applies to using the payment plan. It's a convenient and low-cost way to fund your education and manage your budget. Sign up early to get the best options.

Check out these Account Pages if you have questions.

Complete the student information change form and bring it to the Registration Office along with legal documentation showing your former and new name(s). Include legal documentation of your name change. You can send these via email or bring them in person to Building B, Room B105.
