Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is a nationally recognized honors society celebrating members for academic success and ongoing contributions to society. PTK eligibility requires 12 completed credit hours with a minimum GPA of 3.25.

ECC’s Rho Kappa chapter offers provisional membership for newly enrolled students. PTK members participate in various scholarship, service, leadership, and fellowship activities. Participation in state, regional, and international conventions broadens members’ experiences and builds leadership skills. PTK membership is also noted on official college transcripts and recognized at commencement. A one-time application fee applies. Members also gain access to exclusive scholarships, networking opportunities, and leadership development workshops designed to enhance both academic and professional growth throughout their college journey and beyond.

Becoming a Member

Membership Requirements

To become a standard member of the Rho Kappa Chapter, you must achieve the following:

  • A cumulative grade point average of 3.25 (maintenance GPA is 3.0)
  • Have completed 12 college-level credit hours of the degree or certificate coursework at ECC
  • Complete the Honors Program Application
  • Attend a new member orientation session
  • Pay the one-time membership fee of $99*

Membership dues are non-refundable. Membership fee payments are made to , Building B, Room B151. Four dollars of each membership fee will be used towards a Rho Kappa Transfer Scholarship. All inducted members are eligible to apply.

Membership Status

  • Provisional

    These members have not completed 12 college-level credit hours and/or have not demonstrated a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25. These members will be inducted once those requirements are met. Provisional members are encouraged to participate in chapter activities and may work towards fulfilling requirements for the membership status they wish to obtain.

  • Standard

    These members have met the minimum requirements for membership. They are not expected to participate in any society activities after they have been inducted but will be encouraged to do so. They will receive a membership certificate, card, and pin; the Phi Theta Kappa stamp on their transcripts and diploma; and are entitled to wear the gold stole and tassel at graduation at an additional charge.

  • Enhanced*

    In addition to the above, these members have committed to actively participating in chapter activities. Your benefits include the same as the standard membership and may include the following:

    • Free gold tassel and stole for participants in the graduation ceremony.
    • Eligibility to apply for travel subsidies to conventions.
    • Hold leadership positions.
    • Increased competitiveness for scholarships.

    Specific details of the enhanced membership program will be explained during a new member orientation.

A partnership helps students support each other

ECC's Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society has been cultivating a garden plot at Advocate Sherman Hospital for over three years. Everything the students grow is donated to the Spartan Pantry.
