Program Extension
Program Extension Information
When you enter the U.S. to study full-time as an F-1 student, you receive an I-20 that specifies an expected date for completing your program of study. The Department of Homeland Security requires that students finish their program of study by the completion date on their I-20. Students in associate-level programs are allotted three years (36 months) to complete their program of study. Students in the Intensive English program are allotted one year (12 months) to complete the program.
In some instances, students may not complete their program of study by the end date listed on their I-20. If your I-20 will expire before you complete your program of study, you must request an extension of your F-1 visa status. Extensions are granted based on your anticipated graduation date. Extensions are granted for valid academic reasons only and are not granted to pursue a non-degree course of study.
Eligibility Criteria
To obtain a program extension, students must show that they have continually maintained status and that the extension is needed for compelling academic or medical reasons, such as a change of major or a documented illness. Delays in completing your program caused by academic probation or suspension are not acceptable reasons for approval of a program extension.
Extension of stay can be granted only for documented academic or medical reasons. You may be eligible for an I-20 extension if the following criteria are met:
- Documented academic or medical circumstances were the cause of the delay.
- You are eligible to enroll full-time at ECC and are making satisfactory progress towards your program of study, per the Standards of Academic Progress.
- As evidenced by updated financial statements, you have sufficient financial resources to fund your studies and living expenses.
- The extension is requested promptly, with sufficient time for processing before the current expiration.
How to Apply for a Program Extension
It is essential that you apply for an extension at least 60 days prior to the program end date on your I-20. If you fail to apply in a timely manner, you may face various immigration-related problems, including being ineligible for on-campus employment and practical training. Remember, it is your responsibility to maintain your F-1 visa status. The Center for Global Engagement is not responsible for program extensions that are not requested in a timely manner. There is no fee to apply for an extension. Prior to applying for an extension, please consult with the Center of Global Engagement to determine your eligibility for an extension.
