Student News, Podcast, and Award-Winning Journalism

The Observer is Elgin Community College’s student-run newspaper featuring online articles and coverage of campus news, events, and student life. The organization also produces the Eye of the Observer podcast, now in its second season. The Observer provides students with hands-on experience in digital journalism, writing, editing, photography, podcasting, and multimedia storytelling. Students may also earn college credit while contributing to real-world news production.

Did you know?

The Elgin Community College student newspaper staff, the Observer, earned 13 writing, photography, and design awards from the Illinois Community College Journalism Association. "It's always great to see our work receive recognition," said Camryn Cutinello, Observer editor-in-chief. "Our staff works very hard on every issue we release, and I'm proud of everyone who was recognized for individual awards and our whole staff for the award for best website." The newspaper is a member of the Illinois Community College Journalism Association and the Associated Collegiate Press.
