Simplifying MATH in college

For some, this subject is fun, as certain people have a special interest in solving problems for unknown variables! But for many of us, this subject is intimidating. MATH. Love it or hate it, math is pretty much essential throughout your entire (school) life. It chases after you like a greater-than sign and will eat you up if you don’t comprehend it.  

Math in college, however, is a bit different as some areas of study require less math, while others require more, and different subjects require different types of math. So even if you are intimidated, like many of us, there are a few tried-but-true methods to ensure you can plot the classes you need and get the support you need.  

Placement Testing  

Since math requirements vary greatly based on your major, degree, or certificate, and even the transfer institutions, it’s important to ensure the correct math courses are chosen. Testing scores (like the ACT/SAT, and PSAT) help determine if placement testing is needed. If needed, placement testing can help ensure students get into the right math class for their skill level. Placement testing can be done remotely and on campus.  

Enrolling in your First Math Class 

Taking into account your test scores and placement scores, you may have options for your first college math class. Since the math sequence required for your study or transfer school program varies from program to program, we strongly recommend consulting with your academic advisor before registering to ensure you enroll in the right class for your skill level.  

Math Lab Support  

Once enrolled and class is underway, students can find additional on-campus support to succeed in their class. At Elgin Community College, the Math Lab provides free, independent study areas, interactive workshops, and access to various learning materials tailored to meet your needs. From introductory algebra to advanced calculus, the math faculty on staff can guide students through challenging concepts and problem-solving strategies. Additionally, the lab provides a supportive environment where students can collaborate with peers, build confidence, and develop effective study habits.  

Math Club 

Joining a math club is another way to engage and connect. At ECC, Mu Alpha Theta is a prestigious mathematics honor society and club that promotes and recognizes excellence in mathematics. In Mu Alpha Theta, members engage in a wide range of activities, including participating in mathematics competitions, offering tutoring sessions, and engaging in community outreach programs. These activities provide opportunities for members to develop leadership skills while making meaningful contributions to the community and supporting fellow students.

Math is essential to your academic journey. Depending on what direction you’re headed, you’ll want to take the right math classes for your degree program and possible transfer institution. Evaluating your test scores and possibly taking a placement test will help you and your academic advisor factor in which classes will best support your educational goals. Additionally, support on campus through clubs and tutoring can provide corresponding guidance to accelerate your knowledge and understanding.
