Elgin Community College (ECC) Musical Theatre presents the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, “Next to Normal,” premiering Friday, February 21, and running through Sunday, March 2, at the SecondSpace Theatre in Building H on ECC’s Spartan Drive Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.  On Saturday, March 1, ECC Musical Theatre will host an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreted performance.

This production not only delivers a theatrical experience but also raises awareness about mental health challenges. The musical is an unflinching look at the various perspectives of a suburban family coping with mental illness. Diana Goodman is a suburban mom struggling with bipolar disorder. Haunted by her past, Diana tries to come to terms with her grief as her husband and daughter desperately long for a return to “normal.”

“‘Next to Normal’ is a story of a family crisis, exploring challenges of mental illness, treatment, loss, communication, love, and ultimately hope,” said Doug Orlyk, director of the musical. “It is a story told with realism, humor, and heart, beautifully sung and acted by a fantastic six-person cast.”

Recognizing the importance of mental health awareness, the ECC Arts Center is partnering with the ECC Wellness Team, Ecker Center for Behavior Health, and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to provide emotional and counseling support to attendees.

The production contains adult language and addresses sensitive topics, including bipolar disorder, anxiety, grief, a suicide attempt, the loss of a child, and the use of psychiatric medication. Audience members should also be aware that the performance includes flashing lights, strobe effects, and haze.

Tickets to “Next to Normal” are $22 for adults and $20 for seniors and students. Tickets can be purchased online at eccartscenter.org/tickets or by calling the ECC Arts Center Box Office at 847-622-0300.

“Next to Normal” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. For more information visit mtishows.com.
