Truck Driving Program Admissions
Admission Requirements
Required Prior to Program Entrance:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must hold a valid Illinois driver's license
- Driver's license must be one year (12 months) or more from expiration when classes start*
- You will need to renew your license before starting classes if it expires in 12 months or less*
- You can renew your license up to 12 months in advance*
- Must apply to ECC and have your student ID number
*Not applicable under 21 years old.
NOT Required Prior to Program Entrance:
- Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP)**
- DOT Medical Certificate**
- Drug Screening**
- Any relevant experience
**Completed as a part of Truck Driving I at no additional cost. You must pass the Department of Transportation (DOT) drug test and physical exam. DOT regulations govern commercial motor vehicle drivers' use of drugs and alcohol and medical qualifications. As such, Elgin Community College is required to conduct mandatory drug and alcohol testing of students in the Truck Driving Program at specific times and under specific conditions.
How to Get Started
To enroll in the truck driving program at Elgin Community College, you'll need prior consent. Please review the requirements above.
If you meet the requirements, follow these steps to enroll in the program:
- Use the Truck Driving Program Consent Request form to request consent to enroll (ECC Student ID number required)
- Watch your email inbox for further communication from the Truck Driving Program
- Register for all 3 required courses*
- Truck Driving I (BRG-101)
- Truck Driving II (BRG-201)
- Truck Driving III (BRG-202)
*To complete the program, you must enroll in all 3 courses. For information on class grouping, refer to the table below.
Request Consent to Enroll
You must have instructor consent before you can register for Truck Driving classes.
Registering for the Correct Courses
In order to obtain a CDL through ECC, you must complete all three (3) courses in the Truck Driving Program: Truck Driving I, Truck Driving II, and Truck Driving III. ECC offers both day and night classes for Truck Driving.

- The table below will display the course sections available for your selected term.
- Click the plus (+) icon next to each class to view course meeting times and descriptions.
- Register for the exact section codes listed in the table.
NOTE: You must register for all three (3) course sections of matching type (day, night, late-start day) listed in the table. Do not register for courses across different types or classes that have already started without explicit approval from the instructor and/or program director.

Late Start courses are day courses offered during the second 8 weeks of the semester. If you register on or after the tuition due date for the semester, your payment is due the next calendar day before 7 pm.
