I began my journey at Elgin Community College in Fall 2022 as a GED student, returning to education after many years. As a wife and mother of three, the decision to come back to school was not simple. It required sacrifice, courage, and a belief that my dreams still matter. I wanted to show my children that it is never too late to begin again, no matter your age or the obstacles you face. I also felt a responsibility to build a stronger future for my family, and that step opened the door to a journey of purpose, leadership, and transformation. As one of the few GED graduates who continue to earn a college degree at ECC, I stand as proof that the path forward is possible, even when it feels uncertain.

A defining moment in my journey came when I was nominated to join the very first National Adult Education Honor Society chapter at ECC. That experience helped me understand how important it is for adult learners to feel connected, supported, and guided as they navigate college. With that purpose in mind, I helped create the first official NAEHS student club at ECC, a space focused on connecting adult learners, ESL students, and GED students with ECC and community resources so they could succeed and complete their academic goals. When I accepted the responsibility of serving as President, I did it with the intention to build a community where students felt encouraged, informed, and confident in their ability to move forward. Founding this club was not just an accomplishment. It was a commitment to walk beside other adult learners, so they never feel alone.

Throughout my time at ECC, I pushed myself academically and embraced every opportunity to grow. I maintained a high GPA, earned multiple nominations to the President’s List, and became a member of Phi Theta Kappa. I collaborated with ECC Marketing to share my story as a wife and mother returning to school, hoping it would inspire others to take their first step. I was featured in Impact Para Ti magazine, completed a qualitative research study through CURIC on the experiences of mothers returning to school, and presented my findings at the undergraduate research symposium. Each experience strengthened my voice, my confidence, and my commitment to serving others, not just as a student, but as a future educator.

ECC became one of my favorite chapters in life because of the instructors who guided me through it. Their dedication, compassion, and belief in their students make success possible for students like me. They encouraged me in moments of doubt, challenged me to grow, and helped shape me into the educator I am becoming, one who leads with heart, professionalism, and purpose. As an early childhood educator, I carry the responsibility of helping the next generation succeed, and ECC has prepared me to do that with intention and love.

As I graduate with my Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education, I carry with me more than a degree. I carry the dreams of my family. I honor the women in my family whose educational journeys were cut short by sacrifice, circumstance, or lack of opportunity. I walk for them, for the paths they could not finish, and for the dreams they never had the chance to pursue. I also dedicate this accomplishment to my children, who are my greatest motivation. I hope they follow the footprints I leave at ECC and believe in their own power to achieve anything they set their minds to. And to my husband, thank you for your support and for walking beside me every step of the way. This degree is not just mine. It is ours. One goal crossed off our list, and many more to accomplish together as a team.

To every parent, every adult learner, and every dreamer in my community, your journey is not over. Your goals still matter. With perseverance, courage, and support, everything is possible. I hope my story reminds you that it is never too late to rewrite your future, and that your path also has the power to inspire others.
