After graduating early from high school, I was all set to attend a four-year university. However, I chose Elgin Community College because it was closer to home for personal and financial reasons. At first, I was really upset. I felt like I had missed out on the “real” college experience and couldn’t help but compare myself to others going away for school. But over time, that perspective completely changed.
During my first semester at ECC, I didn’t know what to expect as a first-generation student. Thankfully, ECC had the support I needed to make me feel more confident and prepared to navigate the college experience for the first time. Programs like TRiO have helped make the college process less stressful, as my coordinator has supported me a lot in the transfer transition process. I also joined the honors program, which challenged me academically and connected me with other students who shared similar goals while being in a smaller classroom.
Throughout my time at ECC, I also became heavily involved on campus. Joining many clubs and organizations was the best decision I made. I soon took on roles like being the Spartan Pantry Officer for Phi Theta Kappa, where I helped manage and promote the college pantry. I have also served as the Marketing Officer for USAC, joined the ECC library committee, and later became the KCT Credit Union Student Advisory Board secretary. Being in student life has made me feel more connected to my peers and create fun-lasting memories, like the student life retreat this past summer. These experiences as a student leader have made me grow not only as a student but as a leader, giving me a sense of purpose and community.
Looking back, I am very proud of everything I have accomplished here at ECC. These last two years have taught me that success can be reached no matter where you are; it is what you make it to be. Sometimes the path doesn't always look like what you imagined, but everything happens for a reason, and choosing ECC first was the best thing that happened. Now, I am more confident and prepared to fully transfer to a
four-year institution this upcoming fall and pursue a major in business. I am very excited about what the future holds, and I will forever be grateful for the foundation and support that ECC has given me.
