My time at Elgin Community College has been an experience I will always value. I hadn't really looked back on my past year here until I began writing this, and it made me realize just how much I've grown in such a short time.

Things weren't always easy, with financial challenges and taking care of my mental health. There were moments when I questioned myself and wondered if I was truly capable of making a difference in my life. After graduating from high school, my original plan was to attend a four-year university, but I chose ECC because it was closer to home and a financially better option.

At first, I felt disappointed and thought I was missing out on the “real” college experience while others went off to school. But over time, my perspective changed. ECC ended up being exactly where I needed to be, a place that helped me build confidence, learn more about myself, and discover what I truly want for my future.

Graduating from my phlebotomy program fills me with pride and gratitude. This journey challenged me in ways I didn't expect, but each obstacle helped shape me into the person and the health care professional I'm becoming. When I first started the program, I had to learn how to balance work, studying, school, and still manage my personal responsibilities.

As I graduate, I know this is only the start of my career in health care. My plans include continuing my education and eventually becoming a nurse. I also hope to pursue medical assisting next, so I can continue to gain skills and experience in the medical field. What keeps me motivated is knowing that my family stands behind me through every challenge, whether things get tough or easy, their support pushes me to keep going and never give up on my dreams. Knowing that my parents will be proud of me every step of the way also drives me forward. Even though I didn't have the greatest school years in the past, I'm still proud that I'm making them proud today.

This graduation is more than just a celebration of finishing Phlebotomy. It's a reminder of everything I've overcome and everything I'm capable of. I'm excited for what comes next and ready to keep learning, growing, and making a difference in the lives of others through my work in health care.
