ECC Student Lisa Hanley

After a 21-year career as a firefighter-paramedic, Elgin Community College student Lisa Hanley is reinventing herself. “I wasn’t ready to retire, so I am here to start a new career in health care,” Hanley said, who is now pursuing a nursing degree.

She found adjusting to college life easy after two decades off. “I was a little worried about my classmates being a lot younger than me, but there is such a range,” Hanley said. “We all bring something different to the table.”

Hanley credits her family’s support as they all adjust to life with mom in school. “I can take a lot of online classes and classes during the day; I only have one night class. My kids are excited for me to be doing this for me.”
