Elgin Community College student Kyle Virmond knew from a young age that he wanted to work with his hands.

After exploring automotive and manufacturing classes at Hampshire High School, he gave welding a try and has been pursuing it ever since.

“I knew right away, I really like this,” Virmond said.

As a hands-on learner, working with the materials is one of his favorite parts of the welding program.

“The welding program (at ECC) has gotten me so far already. I am starting to look for jobs,” Virmond said.

He hopes to find a career building or repairing heavy machinery, but he is also intrigued by the idea of working on a pipeline. He plans to graduate from ECC in the spring of 2027.

Recently, Virmond was part of a student tour to ECC’s new Manufacturing and Technology Center (MTC).

“My jaw was on the floor the entire time. It is crazy how big it is! The storage room there is the size of our shop now,” Virmond said.

Read more about this welding student below.

What is one thing you do outside of ECC? I like working on cars, I have a ‘02 VR6 Volkswagen Jetta, and hanging out with friends.

What is one of your study hacks or habits? I like to sit in bed with my laptop and go over everything.

What is one thing that really makes your day? Nice weather!

What is your favorite meal to cook or eat out? Chipotle burritos.

Would you like to shout out any ECC staff, faculty, or peer? The entire welding department: Dave, Jimmy, Tom, and Marc.

What advice do you have for new students? Take your time. I am learning at a slower pace, but it is helpful for me. No need to rush it.
