Kristina Brown stands near a LEGO art piece in the childcare center
In her 30 years at Elgin Community College, Kristina Brown, ECC supervisor of childcare services, has never had a dull moment. “I work with children, every single day is something new.”
Brown started at ECC’s childcare center as a student worker. She remembers her first day as incredibly busy, but she was excited by the new opportunity.
“Sometimes I cannot believe how big the college has gotten. The growth! Not only in the buildings but in the population and the programs offered,” Brown said.
Working with children for more than three decades has taught Brown the importance of patience in being a good human. Luckily, she had excellent role models. “Lisa Johnson and Karen Vial taught me what it means to be a family,” Brown said, choking up. “They had an amazing partnership, were so supportive, and worked so well together.”
When asked what piece of advice she would give a new employee, Brown said, “Walk around, meet people, and see everything here! Don’t be afraid to step out of your department.”
“This place is home. It is a family. I knew when I was starting my family, I wanted them to grow up here,” Brown said.
