In August 2024, ECC launched its Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Strategic Planning Process. The plan, guided by a diverse steering team, will name key initiatives to strengthen support for Latinx students.

The plan aligns with ECC’s broader 2023-2027 Strategic Plan and aims to strengthen the college’s commitment to serving Hispanic and Latinx students. ECC is committed to creating an inclusive environment where Latinx students feel empowered to succeed. With 52% of our student population identifying as Latinx, our HSI designation is more than a title — it’s a promise to foster equity, opportunity, and success. HSIs, recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, must have at least 25% Latinx enrollment and show a commitment to serving students with financial need.

ECC goes above and beyond to ensure that all students, especially those from underrepresented communities, have the resources they need to succeed. By clarifying ECC’s mission as an HSI, the plan will find strengths, address growth opportunities, and set up actionable strategies to improve support for Latinx students and transform the HSI designation into meaningful action.

The process unfolds in three stages: listening, where community feedback is gathered; visioning, focused on developing goals and priorities; and implementation, where strategies are put into action. Learn more about this initiative at elgin.edu/hsi.
