“Education is not preparation for life; it is life itself.”  -John Dewey

My name is Raymesha Henry, better known as Ray. I am a Forensic Psychology major in the class of 2025 — at times, I think I'm the ONLY one with this major on campus. Around campus, I am known for my involvement and dedication in campus clubs and organizations. I am a civic engagement leader, coauthor of Experiential Learning and Teaching in Higher Education 2025 edition (ELTHE), Black Student Achievers associate, a 2024 Black Excellence recipient, TRiO participant/advocate, mentee of Purposes with Purpose, and favored by many staff on campus.

I am proud of each and every one of us because, despite challenges, both shared and unique, we made it all the way to graduation. I remember being in a terrible car accident in 2023, towards the end of the semester, and all I could think about was how my recovery time would affect my performance in school. I had a near-death experience, and all I could think about was THIS moment in my school career. That’s the type of grit and determination that got each of us right here on this stage today. Yet, I say this to say that when you have your sights set on a goal you want to accomplish, a place you want to go, or a desire you’d like to fulfill, nothing can stop you from getting there!

As a student we are usually understood by test scores, grade point averages, and participation in classes. Over the years of my school career, I've also learned that who you are outside the classroom also plays a vital role in your success. I am grateful to have been a part of such a diverse and supportive community here at ECC. I want to thank all the donors of the scholarships I’ve received during my time here at ECC (ECC Foundation scholarship, Purses with Purpose, Center for Civic Engagement, and TRiO). These scholarships go far beyond just financial help. They are investments for our future. We will be the new artists, doctors, lawyers, and engineers that keep society productive.

ECC has helped me thrive by simply believing in me, showing up for me constantly through all the trials, and most importantly motivated me to give myself grace on my journey. I’ve gained wonderful mentors, friends, and opportunities that I'll forever be grateful for. I wish us all a blessed and fruitful career filled with an abundance of passion and financial freedom. I hope one day I can give the same help that allows someone to reach their fullest potential. I’d like to end this speech with a quote that I hope you all never forget:

“Good, better, best, never let it rest until your good is your better, and your better is your best.” -Unknown
