Office Space: Tyler O'Donnell

Tyler O’Donnell is no stranger to higher education. The associate dean of the sustainability business and career technologies division has been at Elgin Community College for nine years, starting in student services, admissions, and then advising. 

While in college, O’Donnell was part of a group that tutored local high school students. “That was how I got interested in advising. I enjoyed working with the students and seeing the results.” 

While his current role isn’t as student-facing as previous roles, the new opportunities and challenges give O’Donnell a chance to learn new things every day. “We are all learning about equipment to prepare for the Manufacturing and Technology Center. To be a part of the team that will help the college with this new trajectory is really exciting.”

What is the theme of your space? I love to show off my family, so there are photos of them. I also enjoy doing online walking challenges (Conqueror Virtual Challenges). I am a big Lord of the Rings fan, so I am doing those right now. 

What is your favorite thing in here and why? My family again! I have two kids, and they are number one in my life. Those pictures are my favorite thing. 

Where is your snack stash, and what is your go-to? I have Clif Bars, and I will keep snacks hidden. But Wildberry Skittles are my favorite candy.  

Do you listen to anything while you work? Sometimes, but a lot of this requires a lot of concentration and focus. I always have my AirPods with me if I have time. I like listening to podcasts on higher ed and current events. 

Do you have an office supply you are obsessed with? Post-It Notes. I like all kinds of things, and I always have them. 

Do you have a dream desk accessory? I recently figured out how to put my monitor vertically. It is amazing to have it this way. It is great for emails and stuff like that. Otherwise, I would love a standing desk!
