My journey at Elgin Community College began unexpectedly. One day, I accidentally went to the wrong class with my friend, thinking everything was fine. That’s when I met Sarah Burkhart—an instructor I will remember for the rest of my life. I stayed for the class simply because I was already there, but after it ended, I asked Sarah if I could remain in her classroom. Although I had confused the days and times, the quality of teaching was so impressive that I didn’t want to leave. Sarah kindly transferred me to her ECC Level 3 class. Since that spring, two years ago, my student life at ECC officially began.
I still remember meeting my classmates for the first time. We came from all over the world—Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, Poland, India—and I am from Ukraine. It was incredible to be part of such a diverse group, all united by the goal of learning English. We studied grammar, had many conversations, took notes, and even played games. The class was so engaging and full of life that I didn’t want to miss a single lesson.
The heart of our group was our teacher, Sarah Burkhart. She brought us together as a team, and her passion for teaching made learning enjoyable and effective. After finishing Level 3, I naturally registered for the next level, continuing my path through college.
Now, I am in Level 10, taking English 101. Many of my classmates from that original group moved on, but many also left. Only a few of us have reached this level, and I’m incredibly proud to be one of them. In just two years, I have achieved a level of English I never thought possible, especially considering that I started with zero knowledge.
Of course, I owe my progress to the amazing teachers and professors who inspired and guided me along the way. I am deeply grateful to all of them. Most of all, I want to thank Professor Alison Douglas, who supported me in the previous level, and Professor Coleen Stribling, who inspired me to write journals and essays with confidence.
Looking back, what began as a simple mistake led me to one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. My time at ECC has not only helped me learn English but also given me confidence, friendships, and a deep appreciation for education. I am proud of how far I have come in just two years, and I know that this is only the beginning of my journey. With the support of incredible teachers and my own determination, I now believe that anything is possible.
