Meet Me Monday: Jessica

Elgin Community College nursing student Jessica Bobda has always known she wanted to go into medicine, with several family members leading by example. Her aunt is a pharmacist, and her dad is a physical therapist.  

Bobda started at ECC in January 2024, completing her prerequisites before entering the nursing program. After earning her associate degree, she hopes to continue her education at Northern Illinois University to get her bachelor’s degree in nursing before pursuing the premed track. Bobda aspires to become a surgeon, specializing in reconstructive surgery. 

“A lot of people don’t pursue nursing, then go on to premed. They’ll do a bachelor’s in biology or something, but I don’t want to do what everyone else does. I think having a nursing degree will make me a great doctor,” Bobda said. “I will know how the hospital works as a nurse and a surgeon.” 

Bobda chose ECC not only because of its nursing program but also because it was close to home. “I can study nursing and take some additional prerequisite courses for premed,” Bobda said. “And my teachers are great, they are always there to help.”

What is one thing you do outside of ECC? I like to go to restaurants or family dinners.  

What is your study hack or habit? I do the whiteboard method. I will read the material and then rewrite it to memorize it. 

What is one thing that really makes your day? Coffee, music, and calling my mom.  

What is your favorite meal to cook or eat out? I love steak and fries.  

What surprised you about ECC? The people are very kind and mindful. If you ask for help, they will always help.

Do you have any advice for new students? At first, I was very shy, and I wouldn’t talk to anyone. Make friends! If you have a problem, talk to your teachers.
