My name is Marcos Hernandez, and I am completing my eighth semester at Elgin Community College. My journey here has been anything but traditional, but it has been one of the most meaningful chapters of my life. Coming to ECC gave me the chance to rebuild myself, pursue new goals, and use my experiences to give back to the community in ways that truly matter to me.

Throughout my time at ECC, I have dedicated myself to serving others. I have shared my recovery story at local high schools, spoken to youth about making healthy choices, and volunteered at community outreach events. I work closely with individuals who are struggling with substance use and mental health challenges, offering peer support and encouragement from the perspective of someone who has been through similar battles. Being able to turn my past struggles into something that helps others has been one of the greatest gifts of my educational journey.

ECC has supported me not only academically but also personally. The environment here allowed me to find my voice, develop confidence, and recognize the value of my experiences. My time on campus has taught me that education is not only about classes—it is also about growth, connection, and using who you are to make a difference.

As I prepare for graduation, I am grateful for every step it took to get here. My goal moving forward is to continue serving my community, supporting individuals in recovery, and being a positive example for anyone who feels like their past defines their future. If my story can help even one person feel less alone, then everything I went through has a purpose. I am proud to be graduating from ECC, and I am thankful for the opportunity to share my story.
