One of the most important decisions you’ll make in your college career is choosing your classes! Picking the right schedule can set you up for success, help you save money, and help reduce stress. Here are 5 things to consider when choosing your courses.
Know Your Goals
Are you planning on transferring to a four-year university or getting a career certificate? Maybe you aren’t sure! If you are a transfer student, make sure the courses you select align with your transfer plans. If you are a career tech student, focus on the required courses for the certificate you are seeking. If you aren’t sure, start with the general required courses that will apply to most degrees.
Meet with an Academic Advisor
Do not miss this step! We repeat, do not skip this one! Academic advisors know what classes are available when, they can ensure you don’t take unnecessary classes, and they can help you graduate on time! They will go over the goals you set above and help you achieve them! Schedule an appointment with an advisor and see their services here.
Use the Course Catalog
Using this tool is like a big map to help you decide which routes to take. The course catalog will list the courses and their descriptions, how many seats are available, and any prerequisites. The course catalog can also help you visualize what your weeks will look like for the upcoming semester, so you are able to maintain a life/school balance.
This is the Time to Explore
Use this time to take a class on something you are curious about! Want to explore your artistic side? Take a ceramics class. Maybe you want to sharpen your public speaking skills? Hop into a speech course. These curiosities could grow into something more, take the time to learn more about yourself!
Register Early
Much like meeting with your academic advisor, this is a big one! Register early! Snagging those seats is a great way to start off your semester right. You will stress less, so don’t wait!
