Elgin Community College (ECC) continues to see strong enrollment growth, with the summer 2025 term bringing the college’s highest seasonal headcount in 13 years. A total of 5,497 students enrolled by the 10th day of the term, an increase of 261 students, or nearly 5 percent, compared to summer 2024. The last time ECC saw higher enrollment during the summer term was in 2012, when 5,614 students registered.

Summer session 1 classes started on June 3.

"We're thrilled to see more students choosing Elgin Community College this summer," said President Peggy Heinrich, EdD. "Enrollment increases are not something we take for granted at ECC. They serve as a sign that the community is placing their trust in us and values the education we provide. So, whether students are here to earn a degree, transfer to a university, or build career-ready skills, we are deeply committed to expanding opportunities and ensuring every learner feels supported and empowered to succeed."

Summer enrollment has steadily increased over the past three summers, up more than 1,000 students from 2022, and nearly 2,100 from the pandemic-impacted summer 2020 term.

More students enrolled across multiple academic and career-technical areas this term, demonstrating a consistent demand for ECC’s transfer pathways and hands-on workforce programs. Career and technical education summer enrollment has grown from 733 students in summer 2021 to 1,077 in summer 2025, a 47% increase.

Summer enrollment gains over the past year were seen across key student groups and program areas:

  • University Transfer enrollment rose by 6%, with 175 more students than last summer.
  • Continuing students (those who have previously enrolled at ECC) are enrolling at higher rates, with a 9% year-over-year increase and a 43% increase compared to five years ago.
  • The college also saw growth in Hispanic or Latino student summer enrollment, up 8% from last year, with 2,945 Hispanic or Latino students enrolled in summer 2025, and an increase of 66% over the past five years.

ECC continues to expand academic offerings and support services to meet the evolving needs of students, transfer pathways, and career-ready programs. That investment is paying off. ECC awarded 1,347 degrees and certificates this past spring, its highest total in recent history, compared to 856 in 2021.

The next summer session begins July 7. Fall semester begins August 18.
