Umberto Tinajero, an instructor of Industrial Manufacturing Technology (IMT) and Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) at Elgin Community College (ECC), started his journey at ECC 24 years ago when he first came to campus as a student in English as a Second Language (ESL) courses.
Once he felt proficient, he enrolled in ECC’s Industrial Manufacturing program and earned his associate degree in 2009. Tinajero’s pursuit of higher education did not stop there; in 2018, he completed a bachelor’s degree in industrial management and applied engineering at Southern Illinois University (SIU). Currently, Tinajero is working towards completing his master’s degree.
“My experience at ECC was exceptional,” Tinajero said. “One of the primary reasons I chose ECC was its location, as I am a resident of Elgin. However, after exploring other institutions during that time, I realized that ECC offered the comprehensive skills and education I needed to advance in my career.”
Tinajero’s first role at ECC was as an adjunct professor. After ten years in the role, during which he said his teaching skills had the opportunity to improve and connections to deepen, he transitioned to a full-time position in 2019, in addition to the role of Manufacturing Program Coordinator.
His hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. In March, Tinajero received the full-time Orrin G. Thompson Award for 2024. This award honors faculty members who have made an outstanding contribution to the college's learning environment and are dedicated to student success.
“I was incredibly excited and honored to be recognized for my hard work and dedication to teaching excellence,” Tinajero said. “This nomination is particularly meaningful to me because I see it as an inspiration for all immigrants who come to the U.S. with a dream of achieving their own American Dream. I dedicate this recognition to them, as it proves that with dedication, commitment, and hard work, anything is possible.”
When Tinajero pursued his associate degree, the initial goal was to one day become a manufacturing engineer. “However, once I began teaching, I discovered a true passion for education,” he said. “Being a professor at ECC allows me to have a meaningful impact on students’ lives, and I genuinely enjoy seeing how I can help shape their futures and contribute to their success.”
In September, ECC broke ground on its new 150,000-square-foot Manufacturing and Technology Center. As the manufacturing coordinator, Tinajero is actively involved in its development and implementation.
“I am incredibly excited about this facility because it will provide students, apprentices, and current employees with access to cutting-edge technology that aligns with industry standards,” Tinajero said. “As both a former student and long-time staff member, I’m proud to see how far the program has come and am thrilled to be part of this transformative opportunity for the next generation of skilled professionals.”
From stepping into his first ESL class to stepping on ceremonial soil at the groundbreaking ceremony, Tinajero’s dedication hasn’t wavered, and he encourages his students to adopt the same energy while pursuing their goals.
“If I could give any advice, it would be to stay patient and persistent, trust the process, and embrace every learning opportunity along the way,” Tinajero said. “Staying focused on long-term goals is key, but it’s equally important to enjoy the journey and continue growing both personally and professionally.”
