On March 20, 2022, I was honorably discharged from the United States Navy, culminating almost four years of active duty service. Many people have asked me why I chose to join the military, particularly at 18. The truth is, at that time, I didn't have a clear direction for my life after high school. However, I was driven by one simple desire: to make my parents proud.

Having grown up in Elgin, attended Ellis Middle School, and graduated from Elgin High School in 2018, my journey wasn't without its challenges. During high school, I struggled academically and often veered off course in my studies and personal conduct. Unsure of what path to take post-graduation, I decided to enlist in the Navy, which ultimately proved to be one of the best I've ever made. Through my military service, I underwent significant personal growth, acquiring invaluable skills such as hard work, determination, and respect, all while embracing the core values of the Navy: honor, courage, and commitment. After completing one deployment and serving in Norfolk, Virginia, I returned home with a newfound sense of purpose.

In the summer of 2022, I decided to enroll at Elgin Community College, which initially filled me with apprehension. My previous academic experiences had left me doubting my abilities, and I feared the challenges of navigating the education system again. Additionally, as a veteran, I felt somewhat disconnected from my fellow students, given our different backgrounds and experiences. However, my time at Elgin Community College has proven to be transformative.

Here, I've found myself embraced by a supportive community with professors who are not only knowledgeable but genuinely invested in their students' success. Resources for academic assistance are also readily available, ensuring that students like me have the support needed to thrive.

The transition from life aboard a warship to the classroom environment felt surprisingly seamless, largely thanks to ECC's support to student veterans. I am immensely grateful to all those who have helped me along this journey, particularly individuals like John Long and Anitra King, who provided invaluable guidance, especially during periods when my military commitments necessitated my absence from class.

To the entire faculty and staff at ECC, I extend my heartfelt thanks. Thanks to your support and encouragement, I stand poised to achieve a significant milestone this spring: becoming the first member of my family to graduate from college. To my parents, I say: Look, Mom and Dad — I made it!
