College is a unique and transformative time in your life, offering countless opportunities for personal growth, academic achievement, and social connection. After you’ve checked off everything on your list from enrolling at Elgin Community College to registering for classes, the next step is to embrace the ECC experience. We know that college is more than just classes, so here are 5 tips to help you make the most of your time here.

1. Get Involved

One of the hardest things for anyone to do is try something new! Putting yourself out there can be scary or daunting for many. Trying new things allows you to unlock hidden talents or explore a subject you’ve been curious about.

We are trying new things, right? Why not start with a club where you can meet new friends and like-minded people? There are over 25 clubs and organizations at ECC! If the idea of showing up at a club meeting sounds like too much, stop by Clubchella! The event is a few weeks after the start of school and is a way to explore the clubs offered at ECC with no pressure.

Another way to get involved is by taking advantage of leadership development workshops and service opportunities. Engaging in a service opportunity is a rewarding experience where you can gain leadership skills, build confidence, take on new challenges, and make a difference while being a part of a caring community. Some opportunities to give back to your campus and community include the Center for Civic Engagement, Phi Theta Kappa, and CURIC.

2. Get to know staff and professors

Did you know there are about 1000 employees at ECC? They are here because they believe in helping and serving students! They also have a wealth of knowledge about what you might be experiencing. Professors are people too and they know what they are talking about, if you have questions, they are there for you. Additionally, staff members are happy to help even if they aren’t the “right” person, they can help you get to where you need to go.

3. Take advantage of resources

In addition to staff and faculty, ECC offers many resources to help its students in as many ways as possible. The MyECC app has calendar events, D2L connectivity, your schedule, and more to help you stay organized and informed throughout the semester. For academic help utilize your professor’s office hours, a designated time to get some 1:1 time with them. There are also tutoring centers for almost every subject including The Write Place, The Math Lab, and more.

Did you know there is an on-site childcare center for students and employees? Have you checked out the Center for Financial Empowerment and Wellness in Building C yet? Spartan Pantry, located next to student life, provides free food and supplies for students.

4. Take care of your health

Your physical and mental well-being are crucial. Make time for exercise, the ECC Fitness Center is in Building J and has convenient hours. Don’t forget to eat healthily too, at the ECC Cafe in Building B, you can find a salad bar, make a custom sandwich, or grab something to drink. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to seek support from Wellness Services. Located on campus, Wellness Services offers private counseling sessions, small group talks, and outreach programs.

5. Get a Job or Apprenticeship

On-campus jobs allow you to work around your coursework schedule. ECC hires students to work in various offices and departments across the campus, from the admissions office to the arts center to the fitness center.   You can contact the Financial Aid Office to learn more.

Additionally, an apprenticeship or internship is a great way to get on-the-job experience while still in school. The Workforce Development department has many relationships with local businesses looking to hire a student just like you! There are many positions available so you could explore your options.

College is what you make of it! There is so much ECC has to offer if you take the time to explore the campus. Take advantage of the resources and opportunities that come up. Be open to new experiences, say yes, and know you belong
