What is the key to successfully transferring after Elgin Community College (ECC)? Early planning! Here are five tips to ensure a seamless transfer:

Commit to a major.
Choosing a college major is important in your academic and career journey. It involves picking a field of study that aligns with your interests, skills, and long-term goals. This decision often requires self-reflection, research, and sometimes even experimentation with different courses or disciplines. For assistance in choosing and/or confirming your major, schedule an appointment with a Career Development Specialist.

Create an education plan early on with an academic advisor.
Meeting with your academic advisor and creating an individualized education plan is a proactive step toward achieving your academic goals. It provides a clear roadmap for your time at ECC, ensuring you stay on track and maximize the opportunities available before transferring. Your academic advisor can also provide valuable information about transfer resources to help facilitate a smooth transfer.

Attend transfer events on campus.
Transfer Services hosts many events to help you explore transfer opportunities and find the best path to continue your education. These events include transfer fairs, like the State Universities of Illinois Transfer Day in the fall and the Private Illinois Colleges & Universities in the spring. Transfer fairs bring transfer representatives to campus, providing an excellent opportunity for you to learn about transfer programs, admissions processes, and financial aid options. You can also sign up and attend transfer tours to many of ECC’s top transfer institutions. Transfer tours provide a firsthand experience of these institutions' environment, facilities, and resources.

Pay attention to admission requirements and deadlines for transfer schools.
Missing a deadline or overlooking a requirement can delay your transfer plans. Meeting with your ECC academic advisor to monitor your progress and discuss updates to your transfer plan is crucial. Also, transfer representatives visit ECC frequently so you can speak directly with admissions professionals, ask questions, and gather information—all without leaving campus.

Explore and apply for scholarships.
Did you know that many institutions provide scholarships specifically for transfer students? These scholarships often consider factors such as GPA, involvement in extracurricular activities, and financial need. Taking the time to research and apply for these opportunities can greatly reduce the cost of tuition, fees, and other educational expenses.
