One of ECC’s Academic Advisors, Ray Jones, is coming up on ten years in higher education. He has served in various roles but found his calling in academic advising while cross-training at DeVry University, where he worked as financial aid advisor. “I fell in love with helping students not make the same mistakes I made in college,” said Jones.
For a short time, Jones worked as an academic advisor at Colorado Technical University until the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, he made the move to ECC. Take five and learn more about Jones beyond his job title, like his love for dogs, his favorite meal, and why he wanted to be an anesthesiologist growing up.
What was your first ever job? My first job ever was as a porter at a bowling alley.
Cats, dogs, or house plants? I personally love dogs, but I don’t have one because I would have so much guilt leaving them at home alone all the time. So, for now, I have houseplants. I have a Bird of Paradise Palm.
What’s one thing that really makes your day? One thing that makes my day is when a student tells me I have been the most helpful person and that they are glad they met with me.
What is your favorite meal to cook or favorite dish to eat out? My favorite meal has to be tacos. I could eat them every day. Both home-cooked or dining out.
What did you want to be when you grew up? When I was growing up, I wanted to be an anesthesiologist. I wanted to be in the medical field like my grandmother and aunts. I wanted to be respected like they were.
