2021 - Katherine Castiglione: ECC opened new doors to my future

As a homeschooler through high school, Elgin Community College helped me smoothly transition to college. I was welcomed warmly to the campus, which gave me a true sense of belonging. I had the true honor of being guided by excellent professors and faculty members who contributed to my overall success, including professors Parul Raval, Christina Marrocco, and Christopher Newman, as well as history/political science tutor Lyndley St. John. These incredible ECC instructors have gone above and beyond to help me achieve my goals.

I also had the pleasure of starting an ECC chapter of EdRising, a national organization for future teachers, along with Deborah Hackbarth and my fellow education classmates. All these individuals helped me grow as a future educator. As the club president, I worked collaboratively with the club members by creating engaging workshops for future educators and hosting community events. Because of this opportunity, I sharpened my leadership skills and expanded my knowledge in education.

Throughout my memorable journey at ECC, new doors have opened that have led to accomplishments – like being a Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society member and being named to the President’s and Dean’s lists. While transferring to National Louis University this fall, I still plan on staying connected to ECC as the college holds a special place in my heart.
