Elgin Community College will celebrate the grand opening of its new Truck Driving Program facility in Building T on Thursday, November 5, with an open house from 2 to 4 pm and an info session at 4:30 pm. The event will allow students, prospective students, and community members to tour the new facility, explore the expanded CDL training lot, and meet Truck Driving Program faculty and staff.

The new facility brings ECC’s Truck Driving Program classrooms, instructors, technology, equipment, and training lot together in one location. The expanded commercial driver’s license (CDL) training lot provides additional space and flexibility for hands-on instruction and meets Illinois Secretary of State standards.

The new facility marks the next chapter for a program that has prepared students for careers in the transportation industry for 35 years.

“Earning a CDL and being prepared to enter the trucking industry are not necessarily the same thing,” said Nate Davidson, director of ECC's Truck Driving Program. “We deliberately choose to give students more than just what they need to pass the test. Our goal is to provide a stronger foundation on which they can continue building throughout their careers. Bringing our classrooms, instructors, technology, equipment, and training lot together in a purpose-built facility gives us opportunities to enhance instruction in ways that simply weren’t possible before.”

ECC’s Truck Driving Programs prepare students for the State of Illinois CDL licensure test while emphasizing the practical skills and knowledge needed to begin a career as a commercial driver. The career also offers strong earning potential and employment opportunities. In the region, truck drivers earn a median annual wage of $58,700, according to 2026 labor market data. The occupation is projected to have approximately 7,790 job openings annually in the region, with projected growth of 3% between 2025 and 2030.
