Elgin Community College’s (ECC) Truck Driving program has begun a new chapter this fall 2026 semester with the opening of ECC’s new Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Truck Driving Center. The college celebrated the center’s grand opening on Thursday, November 5, highlighting a program that has prepared students for careers in the transportation industry for 35 years.

An open house, followed by an info session, was held at 1700 Spartan Drive in Elgin at Building T. The event allowed students, prospective students, and community members to tour the new facility and meet faculty and staff.

The new center brings ECC’s Truck Driving classrooms, instructors, technology, equipment, and training lot together in one location. The expanded CDL training lot provides additional space and flexibility for hands-on instruction and meets Illinois Secretary of State standards.

“This new facility represents more than additional space,” said ECC President Peggy Heinrich, EdD. “It's an investment in our students and our workforce. Commercial drivers are essential to our economy, and graduates can pursue careers in local, regional, and long-haul transportation.”

The investment builds on significant growth in ECC's Truck Driving Program. In 2021, enrollment in the Truck Driving program stood at 23 students annually, which grew to 90 students in 2025, an increase of 291%. In that same time, the number of certificates awarded increased by 433%, showcasing tremendous growth.

“Earning a CDL and being prepared to enter the trucking industry are not necessarily the same thing,” said Nate Davidson, director of ECC's Truck Driving Program. “We deliberately choose to give students more than just what they need to pass the test. Our goal is to provide a stronger foundation on which they can continue building throughout their careers. Bringing our classrooms, instructors, technology, equipment, and training lot together in a purpose-built facility gives us opportunities to enhance instruction in ways that simply weren’t possible before.”

ECC's Truck Driving Program provides approximately 320 hours of instruction across three courses, totaling 16 credit hours. The curriculum combines classroom instruction, supervised driving practice, and on-road training to prepare students for the demands of commercial driving. Students benefit from a 3:1 student-to-instructor ratio, approximately 150 hours of skills-lot practice, and more than 50 hours of public-road driving.

The facility enhances that training experience with two classrooms, a six-lane training lot, and a driving simulator that allows students to develop skills in a controlled environment. Direct access from a classroom to the training yard also allows instructors to move seamlessly between classroom instruction and practical demonstrations.

ECC’s Truck Driving program offers a Basic Vocational Certificate that includes approximately 320 hours of instruction across three courses. Students receive classroom instruction, behind-the-wheel training, and preparation for the Illinois CDL examination, with an emphasis on developing the practical skills and knowledge needed for long-term career success.

“For many of our students, earning a CDL is more than a credential,” said Cathy Taylor, PhD, dean of sustainability, business, and career technologies. “It is a door to family-sustaining wages, long-term career growth, and the chance to build a stronger future for themselves and their families.”

In addition to its standard truck driving certificate, ECC offers a Truck Driving Owner-Operator Certificate for students interested in the business and administrative aspects of the transportation industry. The college also offers a Basic Vocational Certificate for certified forklift operators.

The investment comes as commercial drivers continue to play an essential role in the regional economy. According to 2026 labor market data, truck drivers in the region earn a median annual wage of $58,700. The occupation is projected to have approximately 7,790 job openings annually in the region, with projected growth of 3% between 2025 and 2030.
