Elgin Community College (ECC) students pursuing an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Criminal Justice now have a seamless path to a bachelor’s degree, thanks to a new transfer partnership with Northern Illinois University (NIU). The new agreement allows students to transfer directly into NIU’s fully online Public Service Leadership program.

Designed for students interested in advancing within the public service sector, this program equips graduates with the knowledge and skills to take on leadership roles in criminal justice, law enforcement, and other civic-focused careers. The flexibility of the fully online format makes it especially accessible to working professionals looking to continue their education while managing career and personal responsibilities.

“This partnership reflects ECC’s commitment to creating accessible, career-driven transfer opportunities for our students,” said Tracy Vittone, Director of Transfer Services at ECC. “NIU’s Public Service Leadership program offers an ideal next step for students who want to grow as leaders and continue serving their communities — all while having the flexibility to work and study on their own schedule.”

“We are excited to partner with ECC to provide this opportunity to transfer students,” said Rodrigo López, executive director of Community College Initiatives at NIU. “This offering bolsters our commitment to meeting students where they are and providing a great educational experience to equip them with the background needed to succeed in their careers.”

“The PSL degree was created specifically for early first responders so that they can step up the next rung of their career ladder to future leadership in their departments,” noted Kurt Thurmaier, Distinguished Engagement Professor and head of the PSL faculty committee.

ECC continues to be a leading transfer institution for NIU, consistently sending more students to the university than any other Illinois community college. This new partnership strengthens the long-standing relationship between ECC and NIU and reaffirms ECC’s commitment to providing students with clear, career-focused educational pathways.
