Elgin Community College (ECC) is proud to announce a significant increase in dual credit enrollment, highlighting the growing interest and success of its program. Dual credit participation at ECC surged 38% from FY22 to FY23, followed by a 55% increase from FY23 to FY24. Total dual credit enrollment is expected to surpass 2,000 students in FY25.

In FY 22, total dual credit enrollment was 988, 1,356 in FY 23, and 1,895 in FY 24. The greatest growth has been seen in high school students taking college courses at their own schools, underscoring the accessibility and appeal of dual credit options. Through the program, ECC saved students an estimated total of $7,944 in tuition costs in FY23 alone.

“Dual credit programs provide a tremendous opportunity for students to get a head start on their college education while saving on tuition costs,” said Sandra Gonzalez, dean of college transitions and secondary partnerships. “The increase in participation reflects the value and impact of the program on our local students and families.”

In spring 2024, a notable milestone was reached when 65 high school students graduated with their associate degrees alongside their high school diplomas. These graduates saved two full years of college tuition and fees, allowing them to enter the workforce or continue their education at four-year institutions.

Statewide, the demand for dual credit programs is evident. In FY23, Illinois community colleges offered 14,638 dual credit courses, enrolling over 82,600 high school students. Research shows that high school students taking dual credit courses have substantially higher graduation and advancement rates than their peers who do not participate in dual credit coursework.
