The Elgin Community College (ECC) Threatre Department’s fall production, “You Can’t Take It With You,” by Moss Hard and George S. Kaufman, will host an open-access American Sign Language (ASL) theatre performance on Saturday, November 16.
The ASL-interpreted performance will start at 7:30 pm in the Blizzard Theatre on ECC’s Spartan Drive Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin, Illinois. This is the second time the ECC Arts Center has hosted an ASL-interpreted theatre performance.
“Elgin Community College is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can enjoy the arts, including people with disabilities,” said Pietrina Probst, director of ADA, student access & disability services. “By offering ASL-interpreted theater performances, we aim to break down barriers and make live performances accessible to our Deaf and hard-of-hearing community members, ensuring that the beauty and power of storytelling are available to all."
“You Can’t Take It With You” is about the Sycamore clan of Manhattan’s Upper West Side. A glorious collection of contented eccentrics, its members collect snakes, make fireworks, write but never finish plays, and more. Among the mix of zany characters is one normal daughter who happens to be in love with her investment banker's boss’s son.
“‘You Can’t Take It With You’ is an old theatre chestnut, written in the 1930s and one of the ten most produced school plays every year,” said Susan A Robinson, associate professor of theatre at ECC. “The play won a Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1937, a rare feat for a comedy. The late James Earl Jones played Grandpa Vanderhof in the most recent revival on Broadway.”
Although the ASL-interpreted performance runs on Saturday, November 16, the production will kick off at 7:30 pm Friday, November 8, in the Blizzard Theatre.
Additional showtimes include:
Friday, November 15, at 7:30 pm
Saturday, November 16, at 7:30 pm (ASL Interpreted)
Sunday, November 17, at 3 pm
Tickets to see “You Can’t Take It With You” are $14 for adults and $12 for seniors. ECC students are free. Tickets can be purchased online at eccartscenter.org/tickets or by calling the ECC Arts Center Box Office at 847-622-0300.
