The Elgin Community College Theatre Department presents the opening night of “Blue Stockings” on April 26 in the Blizzard Theatre, located in Building H of ECC’s Spartan Drive Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin, Ill.

“Blue Stockings” was written by Jessica Swale and is directed by Susan A. Robinson, associate professor of theatre at ECC. Set in 1896, “Blue Stockings” tells the story of Girton College Cambridge, the first university to admit women. The Girton women study ferociously to match their male counterparts. Yet, the male students graduate and leave the women with nothing but the stigma of being a ‘Blue Stocking,’ an unnatural education woman and not one that any man would want to marry.

“‘Blue Stockings’ is funny and important and has great characters for the students to dig into,” Robinson said. “There’s romance and a riot, and most importantly, it’s about women fighting for their right to an education. I hope the audience is entertained, inspired, and impressed by these women's courage and determination over 127 years ago fighting for their right to an education.”
