Elgin Community College (ECC) will recognize the spring graduates with two commencement ceremonies scheduled for Saturday, May 18, marking not only the academic achievements of its spring 2024 class but also the illustrious 75-year journey of the institution. Among the highlights, the inaugural cohort of ECC’s Ophthalmic Technician program will see 100% of its students successfully completing their Associate of Applied Science ophthalmic technician degree.
“I can’t even describe how excited I am for these first students to go out into the world, and the ophthalmic community is so excited to have these students in the field,” said Shelby Stanley, ophthalmic technician program director. “It’s really needed in this community, and having techs go out well-prepared is so important.”
Commencement will be held at the Building J Events Center, located at the college’s Spartan Drive Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin, Ill. Both ceremonies will honor students from different academic paths and be livestreamed at youtube.com/ElginSpartans.
The University Transfer ceremony at 10 am will recognize candidates for various degrees, including Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in Fine Arts, with a music performance emphasis, Associate in Engineering Science, and Associate in Liberal Studies. This ceremony will feature student speaker Alex Greiff of Elgin, Ill.
At 2 pm the Career and Technical Programs ceremony will recognize candidates for the Associate of Applied Science degrees, vocational specialist certificates, and Basic Vocational Specialist certificates. Melia Delaney of St. Charles, Ill. will deliver the student speech for this ceremony.
ECC President David Sam, PhD, JD, LLM, will deliver the commencement address for both ceremonies, while Donna Redmer, EdD, chair of the ECC Board of Trustees, and Jennifer Clark, English unit adjunct faculty member and 2024 Outstanding Part-Time Faculty Member award winner, will also provide remarks.
