2022 - ECC alum’s heroic actions recognized

Elgin Community College alumna Natalie Kusnierewicz ‘21 received the Life-Saving Award from the South Elgin & Countryside Fire Protection District for her actions in saving the life of her uncle, who collapsed in June. Kusnierewicz is a graduate of ECC’s Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Basic Operations Firefighter (BOF) programs.

Kusnierewicz was recognized for her response as a bystander during the incident, to which the department responded. According to Fire Chief William Luchsinger, this is the first award of its kind from the district. During the presentation, Chief Luchsinger noted that "without her actions, it is possible her uncle would not have survived."

“Thanks to her education and training, Natalie was able to take quick action,” said Chief Ronald Two Bulls, ECC’s senior director of academic programming and public safety training. “This is one of the examples of why we are part of the Center for Emergency Services. Congratulations to Natalie.”

Kusnierewicz was also the recipient of the Leadership Award for her academy class. She is currently a Firefighter/EMT at Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District.
