The Ruth Moody Band and folk duo Dala co-headline a night of soaring vocals, heavenly harmonies, and moving musicianship at the Elgin Community College Arts Center on Friday, March 13. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m.

A founding member of the Billboard-charting trio The Wailin’ Jennys, Ruth Moody is a two-time Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Critics have lauded her ethereal vocals, impressive multi-instrumentalism, and her talent as a songwriter. Her songs are timeless, universal, and carefully crafted, all sung with an intimacy and honesty that is unmistakably her own.

Moody has been recognized by the USA Songwriting Competition and the International Songwriting Competition for several of her compositions, including “One Voice,” which has become a signature song for The Wailin’ Jennys. Moody’s song “Storm Comin,’” from The Wailin’ Jennys’ latest album “Bright Morning Stars,” won first place in the gospel category at the International Songwriting Competition.

Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine of Dala create harmonious songs and sounds that are best described as angelic. Drawing upon influences like The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Bob Dylan, Dala writes songs that are both catchy and insightful. Walther’s ethereal soprano voice blends seamlessly with Carabine’s velvety alto, creating the lush harmonies that have become the band’s trademark. Walther and Carabine are equally entertaining between songs, telling funny and charming stories that make every performance unique.

Walther and Carabine met in a Toronto high school music class in 2002 and have since released five albums and toured extensively across North America. Dala has opened for artists such as Tom Cochrane, Richie Havens, and Arlo Guthrie. The duo has performed at the Newport Folk Festival, the New Orleans Jazz Festival, and the Edmonton Folk Festival. Dala’s PBS special “Girls from the North Country” premiered in 2010.
