Elgin Community College Theatre will present a virtual production of “As You Like It,” by William Shakespeare, on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. on the ECC Arts Center’s Facebook and YouTube pages. This production is directed by Susan A. Robinson, assistant professor II of theatre and theatre instructional coordinator.
The story of “As You Like It” involves recently banished cousins Rosalind and Celia, who are in disguise and on the lam in the Forest of Arden when Rosalind encounters likewise banished love Orlando. Many a mistaken identity, hijinks, hilarity, and love ensue in this beloved Shakespearian romantic comedy.
Robinson decided on this play since it has been six years since the ECC theatre department has performed a Shakespeare play. Initially planned for spring 2020, the show was forced to cancel. ECC Theatre made the commitment to move the show to the fall without knowing whether it would be in-person or virtual.
“Being able to complete this production during a pandemic has made a difference to the students, and I think it will make a difference to our audience,” said Robinson. “Art gives us something bigger than ourselves in which to aspire. The cast worked harder on this than any other production I have been a part of – knowing how important this is at this time and how much it will matter to people.”
“As You Like It” is a free virtual event. After the performance, there will be a live talkback with the actors on the same platforms. The public is invited to join to ask questions and hear from the actors. More information can be found on the ECC Arts Center Facebook page.
