Registration for spring credit classes is underway at Elgin Community College and will continue until classes start on Tuesday, January 19, 2021, space permitting. Continuing students can register for classes now at elgin.edu/accessecc. Open registration for all students begins at 8 a.m. on Monday, November 9, 2020.
In ECC’s efforts to prioritize the health and safety of ECC students, faculty, and staff, the spring 2021 semester will be structured much like the fall 2020 semester, with most courses being delivered online in either a synchronous or asynchronous format.
A limited number of hybrid courses, those meeting both online and in-person because the face-to-face on-campus component is essential, will be offered. Hybrid classes will conclude their on-campus component on May 9, 2021, two weeks before the end of the spring semester, while the online portion of these classes may be scheduled through to the end of the semester. This will allow for a small buffer within the semester for classes on campus to be made up in the event one or more cancelations occur due to COVID-19.
ECC will continue to deliver a high-quality academic experience for students enrolled in online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses. For clarity, some definitions may be useful:
- Online asynchronous: Online-asynchronous courses are delivered 100 percent online, with no face-to-face sessions required. Classes are taught entirely online following instructor timelines and learning outcomes. Students interact mostly through discussion boards and written messages, and all assignments are submitted online.
- Online synchronous: Online-synchronous courses are delivered 100 percent online with real-time specifically scheduled online interaction with the instructor and/or class. These classes allow for engagement in a remote classroom environment.
- Hybrid: Hybrid courses combine both face-to-face and online instruction.
- Face-to-face: A small number of courses that do not lend themselves to online delivery may be held fully on-campus. This format is the traditional on-campus instruction where students and instructors meet in the same physical location at a scheduled time and day, but with reduced classroom capacities.
Support services and resources are available to help students successfully complete their studies. Visit the Remote Hub for detailed information on these services and resources. Students can also email deanofstudentservices@elgin.edu with questions or concerns.
