The Basic Operations Firefighter program provides you with the essential skills and knowledge required for a successful career in fire service. This program covers critical areas such as fire service operations, hazardous materials chemistry, vehicle rescue techniques, and emergency response protocols. You will gain hands-on experience and be prepared to respond effectively to emergencies while learning about firefighter operations, equipment usage, and safety procedures. The program is a foundational step toward becoming a skilled and safety-conscious firefighter.

What Will I Learn in a Basic Operations Firefighter Certificate Program?

The Basic Operations Firefighter program provides essential training for individuals pursuing certification by the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM). The program covers various fundamental topics, including fire behavior, building construction, safety protocols, communication, and using self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Additionally, you will receive training on fire extinguisher usage, ropes and knots, and an introduction to essential courses like Courage to Be Safe and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

The curriculum also explores critical fire service concepts, such as life safety initiatives, fire control, ventilation, ladder operations, hoses and nozzles, water supply, search and rescue, and fire prevention. Basic first aid and CPR techniques are taught alongside fire detection systems. Upon completing the program, you will be eligible to take the State Fire Marshal Certification Test.

Approved by the OSFM, this program is a key step in achieving Basic Operations Firefighter Certification. It builds upon previous training, offering proficiency credit but no pass/no credit options. By completing the course, you will gain the necessary skills to improve firefighter safety, efficiency, and overall response capabilities.

  • Understanding Fire Behavior:  Learn how fires ignite, spread, and behave and how to use this knowledge for safe and effective firefighting.
  • Mastering Firefighting Equipment: Gain proficiency in using essential equipment such as self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), fire extinguishers, hoses, nozzles, and ladders.
  • Performing Fire Control and Ventilation: Master techniques for controlling fires and ensuring proper ventilation to maintain safety during firefighting operations.
  • Conducting Search and Rescue Operations: Develop skills in safely performing search and rescue missions in hazardous environments.
  • Implementing Fire Prevention Strategies: Learn how to identify fire hazards and apply preventive measures to reduce fire risks.
