Position Classifications

Administrative Procedure 5.108

It is important for employees to understand Elgin Community College’s position classification system, and to be aware of the classification to which their position has been assigned.   Employees’ position classification helps to determine the benefits for which they are eligible. If employees have questions about their position classification, they should contact the Human Resources Department.

Depending on an employee’s position, they are either Exempt or Non-exempt from federal and state wage and hour laws. Employees in an Exempt position are not eligible for overtime pay. Employees in Non-Exempt positions are entitled to overtime pay under the specific provisions of federal and state laws. An employee’s Exempt or Non-Exempt position classification may only be changed by the Human Resources Department.

Exempt and Non-Exempt employees may be either Full-Time or Part-Time, and are assigned to one of the following position statuses: Regular, Introductory, Adjunct, Temporary, Seasonal, Contingent, Intern, or Student Worker. These classifications are separate and apart from any outcomes as a result of Affordable Care Act (ACA) reporting.

Full-Time

Full-Time employees are employees who are regularly scheduled to work more than 35 hours a week, or who are designated as Full-Time employees by the College.

Part-Time

Part-Time employees are employees who are regularly scheduled to work 35 or fewer hours a week.

Regular

Regular employees are employees who are not in an Introductory, Adjunct, Temporary, Seasonal, Contingent, Intern, or Student-Worker status.

Introductory

Introductory employees are employees whose performance is being evaluated to determine whether their continued employment in a specific Regular position is appropriate. Employees who successfully complete an introductory period will be moved to regular employment status.

Adjunct

Adjunct employees are employees who are hired to provide instructional, , or library, services on an as-needed basis. Adjunct employees receive all Federal and State legally mandated benefits, such as Workers’ Compensation Insurance.

Temporary

Temporary employees are employees who normally work fewer than 90 consecutive calendar days. The College reserves the right, however, to extend the Temporary status period. Temporary employees receive all Federal and State legally mandated benefits, such as Workers’ Compensation Insurance. Temporary employees are not eligible for other ECC benefit programs.

Seasonal

Seasonal employees are employees who are hired for a period of time to support a specific ECC seasonal activity (e.g., Men’s Baseball Season). Their employment may extend up to 180 consecutive calendar days. Seasonal employees receive all Federal and State legally mandated benefits, such as Workers’ Compensation Insurance. Seasonal employees are not eligible for other ECC benefit programs.

Contingent

Contingent employees are employees who are hired on an occasional as-needed basis, within a twelve month period of time. Employees cannot continue to be classified as Contingent if they work more than 100 hours in the same position during any rolling consecutive 12-month period unless approved by the President or designee. Contingent employees receive all Federal and State legally mandated benefits, such as Workers’ Compensation Insurance. Contingent employees are not eligible for other ECC benefit programs.

Intern

Interns are student-employees who work at ECC to fulfill an internship in a program of study offered by a regionally accredited college or university. Interns may be paid or unpaid. Interns receive all Federal and State legally mandated benefits, such as Workers’ Compensation Insurance. Interns are not eligible for other ECC benefit programs.

Student Worker

Student Workers are ECC student-employees who are hired through programs administered by the Financial Aid Office. Student Workers receive all Federal and State legally mandated benefits, such as Workers’ Compensation Insurance. Student Workers are not eligible for other ECC benefit programs.
