Introductory Period

Administrative Procedure 5.409

Elgin Community College has an “introductory period” for all new employees. ECC may terminate an employee at any time and for any reason during the employee’s introductory period.

The length of the introductory period shall be the first 90 calendar days of employment.

ECC has the right to extend an employee’s introductory period if the College determines, in its’ sole discretion, that the initial introductory period was not long enough to fully evaluate an employee's job performance. The Chief Human Resource Officer must approve all extensions of an employee’s introductory period.

When employees satisfactorily complete the first introductory period, they are assigned to the Regular employment classification for that position.

During the introductory period, new employees are eligible for those benefits that are required by law, such as workers' compensation insurance. They may also be eligible for other ECC benefit programs, subject to the terms and conditions of each benefit program.

This Administrative Procedure will be administered consistent with the College’s collective bargaining obligations where applicable.
