Interior Spaces and Environmental Branding

Administrative Procedure 6.102

Related Procedures

I. Introduction

At Elgin Community College (ECC), our physical spaces contribute significantly to the campus experience and institutional identity. To ensure consistency and alignment with ECC's brand, this procedure establishes clear responsibilities and guidelines for the creation, modification, and maintenance of environmental and branded visual elements.

II. Establishment of an Interiors Committee

The Interiors Committee, established by Cabinet authority, provides oversight for branded interior elements across campus. It collaborates with relevant departments to support institutional branding, including finishes and furnishings that enhance a cohesive campus environment.

Student involvement may be coordinated through the Office of Student Life when appropriate; however, this does not apply to new construction or major renovation projects.

III. Departmental Oversight

  • Public Use Walls and Areas – Managed by Marketing and Communications (MarCom).
  • Classrooms and Academic Spaces – Managed by Teaching, Learning, and Student Development (TLSD).
  • Gallery Spaces – Managed by the Liberal, Visual, and Performing Arts (LVPA) division.
  • Performance Spaces – Maintained by the Arts Center (Building H) under Procedure 6.206.

IV. Branding Walls and Murals

All murals and branded wall graphics in publicly accessible, non-classroom spaces must be preapproved by MarCom. Lack of approval may result in removal. Review criteria include:

  • Alignment with brand standards, institutional goals, and compliance
  • Availability of departmental funding

Appeals may be escalated to Cabinet.

MarCom maintains a registry of branding displays, including expiration dates, and reserves the right to remove them at any time.

V. Campus Furniture and Finishes

  • To a cohesive and welcoming campus environment, the Interiors Committee may advise on branding-consistent finishes.

VI. Art Collection

The ECC art collection is managed by the Dean of LVPA. All requests regarding usage or donations must follow Administrative Procedure 2.504 Gift In-Kind Acceptance.

VIII. Display Cases

Display cases are managed by various departments (Athletics, Student Life, MSE, Health Professions, Communications, Behavioral Science, and the President’s Office). Departments are responsible for upkeep.

  • Neglected cases may be flagged for remediation by the Interiors Committee.
  • Interior maintenance requests (e.g., cleaning, bulb replacement) should be submitted via the O&M work order portal.
  • A registry of display cases and managing departments is maintained by the Interiors Committee.

VIII. Bulletin Boards and Tack Strips

According to Administrative Procedure 3.807 Solicitation on Campus, bulletin boards are for official ECC communications only.

  • The Interiors Committee maintains a list of all bulletin boards and managing departments.
  • New or repurposed bulletin board requests must be reviewed by the Interiors Committee.
  • Personal or non-business postings are not permitted.

IX. Literature Racks

  • Buildings A, O, H, K, and E: Maintained by MarCom. Only MarCom-approved materials may be distributed. Requests should be sent to marketing@elgin.edu.
  • Other buildings: Managed by respective departments. Racks must be regularly reviewed for relevance and quality. Materials placed in literature racks without prior approval are subject to removal.
  • Empty or inappropriate materials racks may be removed by the Interiors Committee.
  • Use of racks is preferred over placing materials on tables.

X. Banners

  • All banners must be designed by MarCom to maintain brand standards.
  • Submit banner requests via the Marketing request portal.
  • Installation must be coordinated through the O&M work order system at least five business days in advance. Include removal date in the request.

XI. Signage and Wayfinding

  • New signage and wayfinding require Cabinet approval and are procured by O&M.
  • Requests for repairs should be submitted to O&M.
  • Any signage with branded elements requires MarCom approval
