Employment of Retirees of the State Universities Retirement System

Administrative Procedure 5.109

Elgin Community College (ECC) will not ordinarily consider employing a retiree of the State Universities Retirement System (SURS) unless such employment is identified by ECC and exempted by SURS as a “critical operations” need, and has received the explicit approval of the Chief Human Resources Officer and President. It is the employee’s responsibility to notify ECC- Human Resources within fifteen (15) calendar days of becoming an annuitant with SURS. An annuitant is a person receiving a monthly annuity payment (pension payments, retirement disability, required minimum distribution, etc.) from SURS. If any misrepresentation of retiree and/or annuitant status is made by the individual, ECC will seek reimbursement from the individual for any penalty imposed on the College, and the college may take disciplinary action against the individual up to and including termination of employment.
