Employee Insurance
Administrative Procedure 5.203
Elgin Community College provides a comprehensive benefits package to any full-time employee employed on a regular basis and not included in a collective bargaining agreement with the College. The Employee Insurance program is a partnership between ECC and the employee[s]; supplemented by employee contributions, as approved by the Board of Trustees. The package includes but is not limited to: health insurance, term life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance (AD&D), long-term disability insurance (LTD), flexible spending, vision and dental insurance. The health, dental and vision insurance covers both the staff member and his/her dependents. Sufficient documentation verifying a qualifying relationship status must be provided, within the required deadline, when enrolling or removing dependents (on or off) the medical, dental and vision benefit plans. Dependents must be covered under the same group health plan as the employee and are not eligible for coverage if the employee is not enrolled. Term life insurance is equal to two times the annual salary rounded up to the nearest $1,000 up to the plan maximum.
Individuals who have retired from full-time service at Elgin Community College may also continue to participate, at their own expense, in the health insurance in compliance with the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), and term life and AD&D insurance programs through conversion and portability options, if eligible.
In compliance with COBRA, an employee has the option to continue group health insurance coverage for the employee and his/her dependents for up to 18 months if employment ends for any reason other than gross misconduct. If an employee is divorced or expires during the term of his/her employment, dependent coverage may be continued up to 36 months at the dependent's cost. Children who no longer qualify as dependents may also continue coverage up to 36 months at their cost.
