On Monday, October 13th, the U. S. NAVY celebrates it’s 250th Birthday!

Some might be surprised to learn that the official birthday of the United States Navy is Oct. 13, 1775. Back then, it was known as the Continental Navy and consisted of a small fleet of ships patrolling to intercept ships sent to resupply British Army troops at or near the colonies. The creation of this fleet was not without controversy. The U.S. Government recognized the need to protect American interests against piracy and rival powers in the western hemi-sphere. The reason this milestone is significant is that in spite of the timeline of the original Continental Navy and the “reboot” of an American sea power. The date the Continental Navy came into existence is the officially recognized birth of the U.S. Navy. HAPPY 250th BIRTHDAY U.S. NAVY!

October breast cancer awareness image

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Campaigns to fight breast cancer. From the installation hospital to The Pentagon Channel, there are many programs, messages, and fundraisers to help find a cure and support those affected by this disease. Military-Themed Museums Go Pink To Support Breast Cancer Awareness, is one example. According to some statistics, approximately one in eight women may develop an invasive form of the disease. Those stats alone make raising breast cancer awareness a crucial issue; for military women there is an additional concern. A 2009 Walter Reed Army Medical Center study found that women serving in the military have a slightly elevated risk of breast cancer.
