University Transfer Degrees & Partnerships
Building Stronger Futures Together
ECC is the ideal starting point for beginning courses that lead to a bachelor's degree or for obtaining summer credits for transfer. Your academic advisor helps create an education plan tailored to your goals, ensuring a smooth transition to college or university.
Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI)
The Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) is a statewide transfer agreement transferable among 100 participating colleges and universities.
Under the IAI, colleges and universities agree to accept a set of general education courses in place of their lower-level requirements. It's essential to note that these general education courses are transferred as a group, so individual course credits may not be transferable. Talk with your academic advisor to understand how your courses will transfer.
The GECC, or General Education Core Curriculum, offers courses that provide students with a broad knowledge and skills across various subjects. Completing the GECC helps develop essential skills, such as critical thinking and communication, which are valuable in both academic and professional settings. Would you like to see how your courses align with the general education core curriculum (GECC)? View the Course Worksheet.
University Transfer Degrees: AA & AS
The Associate in Arts (AA) degree has a fully incorporated GECC. Completing an AA degree lets your transfer school waive general education requirements at any IAI-participating 4-year institution you attend.
The Associate in Science degree (AS) is tailored for students of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). It offers a modified general education package, helping students in rigorous fields stay aligned with peers at four-year institutions. After transferring, they can complete a few general education courses at their chosen institution. The AS degree adds extra math and science courses while postponing two GECC Humanities and Social Sciences courses. While the GECC package remains intact, students fulfill it upon transferring to the university.
Additional University Transfer Degrees
Besides AA and AS degrees, ECC offers programs that support students in pursuing a bachelor's degree after completing their studies at ECC. However, not all of these programs include the IAI general education courses. Working directly with your academic advisor ensures a smooth transfer. After ECC, you’ll create an education plan tailored to your study area and future goals.
University Transfer Degree Partnerships
ECC partners with colleges and universities to make the transfer process easy. Our agreements include Guaranteed Transfers, 2+2 plans (completing two years at ECC, followed by two years at a partner university), and 3+1 plans (encompassing three years at ECC and one year at a partner university for an affordable bachelor’s degree).
