Over the past decade, Venezuela has experienced the largest mass migration in the history of the Western Hemisphere, with tens of thousands of Venezuelans settling in the Chicagoland area. This seminar by ECC Associate Professor of History Antonio Ramirez examines the political and economic forces behind Venezuela’s crisis, including the role of Nicolás Maduro’s regime and U.S. interests in the region. Featuring excerpts from Professor Ramirez’s oral histories with Venezuelan migrants and their allies in Chicagoland, the presentation separates fact from fiction and highlights the local impact of a global crisis. This will be held in person in the Seigle Auditorium E 125 and online via Zoom.
