Planning to Transfer? Learn more about the transfer process including the importance of choosing a major and transfer school.

Overview

Economics is the study of how people, businesses, and governments make choices about using resources—and how those decisions shape the world around us. Studying economics will give you valuable insight into how markets function, how money and trade influence growth, and how policy decisions impact everyday life. Economics courses at ECC count toward a social science general education requirement; however, a four-year degree in economics will give you a deeper understanding of consumer and producer behavior, conduct research, collect and analyze data, monitor trends, and develop forecasts related to the economy.

Whether you’re pursuing a business degree, planning to transfer to a university, or want to understand current events and global trends, taking economics courses at Elgin Community College (ECC) will strengthen your ability to think critically, analyze data, and make informed decisions in a complex economy.

Why Study Economics at ECC?

At ECC, you’ll:

  • Learn the economic way of thinking—how to evaluate choices, incentives, and outcomes.
  • Explore supply and demand, monetary policy, business decision-making, and government regulation.
  • Build skills that apply to careers in business, finance, public policy, or data analysis.

Thinking About a Career in Economics?

Economics courses at ECC also fulfill social science general education requirements, making them a wise choice no matter what major you plan to pursue. However, earning a four-year degree in economics opens the door to exciting opportunities where you can:

  • Conduct research and data analysis
  • Monitor economic and business trends
  • Develop forecasts and policy recommendations
  • Work in fields such as finance, consulting, market research, or government
