She obtained her Juris Doctor degree from the Northern Illinois University College of Law.

Melissa is a proud member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, the Illinois Real Estate Lawyers Association, and the Kane County Bar Association (KCBA). Melissa understands the importance of community service and, for over 30 years, has volunteered with numerous organizations that aim to provide academic, financial, and social resources to youth and underserved and underrepresented populations. Currently, Melissa volunteers with the KCBA’s Lawyer in the Library, offering free in-person legal coaching, document review, and referrals to other resources. She also supports the Centro de Información by providing case analysis and guidance to their immigration services department.

One of her proudest contributions is helping organize the Jane Barbosa Legacy Brunch, a signature event of ECC’s Latinx Heritage Month Committee that raises scholarship funds for undocumented, mixed-status, and DACA students attending ECC. Melissa is honored to be recognized among ECC's Sensational 75, which celebrates 75 outstanding alumni over the college's 75-year history.
